トミモとあきな / TOMIMO+AKINA ( TOMIMOTO, Akina )
TOMIMO+AKINA is a contemporary artist who produces mixed media, photography and performance work. Born in Osaka, Japan. Daughter of a Japanese mother and British father. Currently living in Tokyo. She was keenly aware of her appearance as a mixed-race individual (or “ha-fu” in Japanese means half in English) from early childhood, as she grew up in a neighborhood that consisted only of Japanese families. She has experienced daily microaggressions caused by looking different from ‘normal’ since childhood. For this reason, she was strongly interested in the intuitive awareness that people gain from their appearance. In addition to “seeing,” another important theme is the transition of constructing one’s self-image through the daily gaze of others, or being “seen.” She believes that the self is the flip side of the others and the others are a reflection of the self. The artist name TOMIMO+AKINA (TOMIMOTO, Akina) is a statement of the artist’s desire to work with an awareness that there is a reverse side to the work without adhering to a phantom self. She majored in contemporary art, graphic design, and photography (film) at Kyoto University of Art and Design and graduated in 2010. She also received her MFA from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2023. Although she is currently working in all media, incorporating the element of inorganic perspective such as camera is an important concept throughout her works. The fact that our self-image is not solid is one of our insecurities. However, because of this fluctuating nature, she believe that human beings have a margin for growth until death, and that this is the beauty of human beings.
写真・パフォーマンス・インスタレーションなどの媒体を扱いながら、決して自分の目では見る事ができない人間の自己像を捉え直す作品を制作している。。また、モノや企業のもつイメージや概念をシンプルに整理し表現することを得意としておりロゴデザイナー、グラフィックデザイナーとしても活動している。
大阪府に生まれ。日本人の母とイギリス人の父を持つ。現在は東京在住。幼少期より、自身の中にある好奇心旺盛な部分と自身を俯瞰している部分の二面性を感じていた作家は、「トミモとあきな」と表記して作品を発表している。よって二人組ではない。「日本人」離れした外見と、日本人の内面のコントラストによる屈折が作家と作品の魅力となっている。
作家が写真に興味を持ったきっかけは、初めての記憶と信じていた2歳の記憶が写真に植え付けられていると気づいたからである。イメージの持つ力に驚愕し新しい世界を作り出せる写真の世界の虜となる。それと同時に記憶というものの不確かさ、記憶の虚実性に唖然とした。この体験をした10歳の時に当時最先端の１８０万画素のデジタルカメラをお年玉で購入し写真撮影を日常的に始める。
大学では現代美術・デザイン、そして銀塩写真を中心に学び、2015年より写真家の瀬戸正人氏に師事。
脳は平気で嘘をつく。自身の記憶に騙されながらも共有する何かを信じ合って人々は生きている。同じものを見ても同じようには見えない。作品との出会いから新しい物語が構築されていくことを目的に制作している。
